|| Expert Talks ||

Vice Chief Lieutenant General Manoj Pande appointed as the next chief of the Indian Army. He will assume office on May 1. He is the first officer from the Corps of Engineers to become the Chief.

 This is so important for the military modernization. He could raise that serious debate, placing military tech at the core of Army.

Armed Forces are experienced and well versed with the battlefield demands on military technology. But approach is tardy at best.

At the outset military science and technology is not a unitary subject. Any weapon system is the complex mix of multiple sciences and technologies. Where to focus: a modern missile, aircraft or spacecraft has high end technologies related to materials, electronics, sensors, structures, design, propulsion, control, guidance, navigation, communication, warheads and more.

All are the integration of applied core sciences to integrate disparate technologies into a weapon system. Army is poised to look into such areas and push beyond the regimented routine.

Lt Gen Manoj Pande, AVSM, VSM, an alumnus of National Defence Academy, was commissioned in December 1982 in the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers).
