Remembering ARYABHATTA

World’s Greatest Astronomer & Mathematician

Aryabhatta - the 5th century mathematician and astronomer, author of Aryabhattiyam - who gifted the world many concepts of science and astronomy. He proved that the earth is a sphere, calculated the value of Pi, correct to modern standards and laid the foundation for many more mathematical works in the following centuries

The contribution of this great philosopher, mathematician, astrologer can't be summed up in a few words. He was born in 476 AD in Pataliputra.(Patna)

Man who invented 0 ( zero)

Aryabhatta worked out the value of pi. The man who invented the true value of pi.

He worked out the area of a triangle.  He translated his own shloka which was  “for a triangle, the result of a perpendicular with the half side is the area”.

He discussed the idea of sin.

He worked on the summation of series of squares and cubes (square-root and cube-root).

He talked about the “rule of three” which is to find the value of x when three numbers a, b and c is given.

He calculated the volume of a sphere.

Aryabhatta described the model of the solar system, where the sun and moon are each carried by epicycles that in turn revolve around the Earth. He also talked about the number of rotations of the earth, describes that the earth rotating on its axis, the order of the planets in terms of distance from earth.

He described the solar and lunar eclipses scientifically.

Aryabhatta described that the moon and planets shine by light reflected from the sun.

He calculated the length of the sidereal year as 365 days, 6 hours, 12 minutes, and 30 seconds. The actual value shows that his calculations were an error of 3 minutes and 20 seconds over a year.

It's remorseful that we don't deserve our history and such great men who had contributed so much to this world. Always know your history!

The first satellite of India was established in his memory.

ARYABHATTA (Launch date 19 April 1975 - Decay date 11 February 1992), India's first satellite, named after the famous Indian astronomer of the same name, was launched on this Day 44 years ago.

It was launched by India on 19 April 1975 from Kapustin Yar, a Russian rocket launch and development site in Astrakhan Oblast using a Kosmos-3M launch vehicle. It was built by the Indian Space Research Organisation.

The launch came from an agreement between India and the Soviet Union directed by UR Rao and signed in 1972. It allowed the USSR to use Indian ports for tracking ships and launching vessels in return for launching Indian satellites. Aryabhatta is the first man made (artificial) Indian satellite.

On 19 April 1975, the satellite's 96.46-minute orbit had an apogee of 611 kilometres (380 mi) and a perigee of 568 kilometres (353 mi), at an inclination of 50.6 degrees. It was built to conduct experiments in X-ray astronomy, aeronomics, and solar physics.

The spacecraft was a 26-sided polyhedron 1.4 metres (4.6 ft) in diameter. All faces (except the top and bottom) were covered with solar cells. A power failure halted experiments after four days and 60 orbits with all signals from the spacecraft lost after five days of the operation.

According to Soviet media reports, the satellite continued to function and transmit information for some time. The satellite returned to the Earth's atmosphere on 11 February 1992

Facts

* It was then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who decided to name the satellite after Aryabhata.

* ISRO developed Aryabhata to conduct experiments in X-ray astronomy, aeronomics, and solar physics.

* A toilet was converted into data receiving centre for the satellite in Bangalore.

* The project of the satellite was initially pegged at Rs 3 crore but exceeded the amount.

* The historic event of Aryabhata satellite's launch was celebrated by Reserve Bank of India and its picture appeared on the Rs 2 currency note between 1976 and 1997.

* Before the launch, the Aryabhata satellite had fallen, which resulted in the ceasing of the function of its electrical power system.

* Aryabhata re-entered atmosphere of Earth after 17 years on 11 February 1992.
